A diode allows current to pass through after the current reaches a certain amount. For example silicon has a threshold voltage of 0.7 meaning that if the current is below 0.7V then the diode doesnt conduct any current but as soon as it reached 0.7 it starts conducting. It only conducts current one way. There is however a reverse voltage threshold which is present on practical diode. Diode and rectifier have the same functionality except that diodes conduct small current in milliamp range. Rectifier conducts current if it is above 1 amp.
